Brief watching notes

So, after a lull of many years, I've found myself watching a lot more anime again recently.  I blame Knights of Sidonia for part of the increase in watching, and Crunchyroll for the other part of it.

  • Knights of Sidonia - Watched it when it premiered on Netflix.  An excellent dub of the series, with only Midorikawa Yuhata's voice really irritating me.  Love the gritty science fiction setting.  I also really enjoy how seriously they're playing the life in space setting. Aside from the Heigan/Higgs particles, there feels like very little handwaving to cover or magic away the trouble of living in space. It really is rising to the top of my favorite anime list.  Watched three times through so far, once without the dub too.
  • Majestic Prince - Been watching this subbed on Crunchyroll.  I like the idea, and the Gundam Seed art style appeals to me.  Misfits become saviors against a savage alien race.  Nothing special, but nice eye-candy and mecha!
  • Fate/Zero - I'm a huge Fate/Stay Night / Type Moon universe fan (anime and manga, not the visual novels.)  I'm enjoying Zero even more so over Stay Night because of all the backstory that is being laid out for the characters.  Need to finish it up as I've only seen the first half. I really enjoyed the scene of the Three Kings sitting down to a drinking contest.  (Season 1, episode 10 or 11, not sure right now.)  I enjoyed the insight into Rider (Alexander the Great) and Archer (Gilgamesh) and found the differences of atitude over ruling 'over' their subjects vs Sabre's (Arturia) ruling 'for' their subjects very interesting.
  • Aldnoah.Zero - Love the art style, ooh look, Giant Robots!  I've only watched up to episode four so far, and I'm left at a middle ground on this one.  The premise is nice, but I'm unsure that the main characters are able to carry it.  Kaizuka Inaho needs to have some more backstory told before I can just accept that he isn't just some lucky savant with tactics and no emotions.  I want to know more about Troyard Slaine and his story too.

I tried to watch some of Sword Art Online, but I'm not sure how I like the time skips.  May just have to track down the light novels for that to get a more complete story.  I also keep failing to start watching Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, even though I really want to see a more manga inspired version of the series.

1 I've been watching Knights of Sidonia, although like everything else, in this season of ever increasing overtime, I've been falling behind.

I did facepalm at the idea of 253 mecha firing their engines at once being able to go further than they could individually.

2 *shrug* I didn't think anything of it until you said something. It made sense to me.  Granted it wouldn't work because each mecha still weighs the same and each engine still puts out the same amount of energy.
Oh well.  The idea looks cool.

3 I also thought it was kinda lazy that their fleet compliment (before the loss) was a power of two.

And that they ONLY had type 18 mecha, no longer range scouting/rescue craft.

And why even have two weeks rations on the mech when its working range is less than a day's travel?

But on the other hand... thigh boots, so it's all okay. :-)
