Bioshock Infinite - brief thoughts (non spoiler)

(Yes, I realized I had a blog today, so I'm doing some posting.)

Finished up Bioshock Infinite on Monday and wanted to let the game ending sink in before I said anything on the subject.  This post might allude to events in the game, but should not contain any spoilers for the main plot.

My simple summation of the game? An average first person shooter with an amazing plot. I was playing on normal the whole game. I didn't find any of the mechanics for the action sequences to be particuarly amazing or jaw dropping. They were well constructed, fit the game universe, and didn't break the games 'rules' without making it clear that rule breaking was going to occur. Largely, the combat was very similar to the original Bioshock, except there were fewer Vigor users early on (and even in the late game.) The special enemies felt special and took a little work to take down, or at least a little bit of thought and environment use.

The story, on the other hand, had me paying attention from page 1 all the way to page 100. While I 'played' Booker, he was just the right amount of voice in the game to make him interesting.  I wanted to understand what was going to happen with 'Bring us the girl, wipe away the debt.' The game paid off in spades, and while others might have seen the ending coming a little ways in, it caught me completely off guard.  It was a good ending and right for the story.  Elizabeth too was an excellent companion during the game.  I never felt like she was a forced voice in the story, nor some NPC assigned to follow me around.

I'm looking forward to trying 1999 mode out in a couple of months, once the DLC packs have hit.
